INTERIOR DESIGN FOR DINING AREA

dining room

The dining area is not only a place for serving the meals, but it also represents the family unit, the heart of the whole house. Because it is the place where family and friends gather, for unforgettable moments. Especially for holidays, special occasions and other events. In new homes, mainly, the dining area is a separate room or an integrated part of the living room. It can even be set up in the kitchen, if space allows. But regardless of the chosen place, the dining area deserves an interior design project that creates an organized, efficient, bright and spacious space, that conveys good mood, positive energy, a warm, comfortable and attractive atmosphere.

Functionality

Before starting the interior design project for the dining area, you need to decide what the functionality of the space is. Respectively think about whether the dining area will host only family dinners or also meetings or parties with several friends and all loved ones. Which will lead to sizing the space needed for the dining area, as well as determining the shape and size of the table and the number of chairs. At the same time, take into account the possibility that the dining area can also be the place for business meetings, but also think about whether what you want is an intimate space or a formal, very elegant one. The answers to these questions will form the basis of the selection of interior design elements included in the dining area.

Colors

The interior design style for the dining area must be in line with the style of the entire home, including the chosen color scheme, even more so in the case of the dining area integrated into the living room. At the same time, you can use colors precisely to highlight and separate the dining area from the rest of the room. Thus, you can choose to paint a wall or the walls surrounding the dining area in a different color than the rest of the room. Choose the color according to the functionality of the area. For example, if you will use the area mainly for breakfast or lunch, the dark shades can be a little too intense, so neutral colors are recommended or, at most, you can experiment with shades of green or blue. While if the dining area is intended mostly for parties, you can play with bold, energetic shades. Paint is not, however, the only way you can enhance the dining area. You can also opt for a wallpaper with a pattern and prints, for more color and texture in the space.

Lighting

Make sure the dining area gets enough light to visually increase the interior space and create a comfortable atmosphere. A dining area placed close to the window will enjoy natural light, but also an opening to the outside nature. We must not forget, however, that many of the meetings in this space will take place in the evening, therefore lighting fixtures must be included to provide the necessary light inside, but also an extra touch of elegance. A chandelier, for example, positioned above the table will become a focal point in that area. It is also recommended to add light sources around the edges of the room and at eye level in the form of lamps or sconces. You can also choose dimmer switches to adjust the light intensity and easily change the mood of the dining area depending on its utility at a given time.

Furniture

Regardless of the size of the dining area, the table will be the center of attention. The size and shape of the table depends on the space available and the number of guests who will meet around the table. If the dining area is a separate room or you have enough space available in the living room, opt for a long, rectangular table. Also, an extendable table can represent an option to adapt the dining area to specific needs. Add comfortable chairs with backrests, which can be made only of wood or upholstered in rich colors, depending on the chosen interior design style, personality and individual preferences. Don’t forget about the storage spaces, shelves, cupboards and even a minibar. It is important not to push all the furniture to the walls. By moving furniture away from the walls, the space appears larger and more inviting.

Accessories

Rugs or drapes can add warmth and texture to the room, while artwork or photographs can provide visual interest. Choosing a suitable rug is not limited to its colors or pattern, which can either fit perfectly into the interior or be an accent that highlights the focal point of the interior even more. The rug should be large enough so that the table and all the chairs are placed on the rug without reaching its edges, but at the same time it should not cover the entire dining area floor. Depending on your preferences, you can use tablecloths or special plate holders, napkins or aprons, which can be matched with the design of the room or can emphasize the theme of the meeting, the celebration or holiday that represents the reason for gathering family and friends around the table.

Personalizing

The dining area can also be a business card for the hosts. You can decorate the space with art objects, including those made by a family member, or vacation photos, thus adding personality to the room while also providing a conversation starter. Fresh flowers instantly brighten up any area of the house, and the dining table is no exception. With the mention that they must not obstruct the view between the guests on opposite sides of the table. An extra freshness can also be provided by natural potted plants, placed on nearby shelves. Also, decorative candles, scented or unscented, can complement the warm and friendly atmosphere of the interior.
