03 Jun BUNK BED FOR EXTRA SPACE IN KIDS’ ROOM
The bunk bed has become an almost indispensable piece of furniture in kids’ room. Especially when two kids share the same bedroom and they are twins or close in age. By integrating a bunk bed into the interior design of the kids’ bedroom, the room will be more spacious, providing the necessary space both for the other furniture items, such as a desk or library, but also for the kids’ games.
Bunk bed, used since ancient times
The idea of a bed was first seen in ancient Egypt. Before, people usually slept on the hard ground. The Egyptians were the first to use sleeping places forerunners of what we call beds today, composed of a wooden frame filled with a softer material such as cotton or feathers. Originally these beds were intended for the nobles and elite of society, often ornate and made of expensive materials, reflecting the status and wealth of the owners. Over time, beds have become a normal concept around the world as necessary household furniture.
The history of the bunk bed is difficult to identify. There is no specific person who can be credited with inventing the bunk bed, but the first bunk beds are believed to have existed since medieval times, when poorer people living in less spacious homes tried to find solutions to have more space inside.
In more recent history, bunk beds gained popularity in ship interiors and army barracks during the 18th century. The confined spaces of these interiors required practical solutions to accommodate a large number of crew members or soldiers. Bunk beds proved to be the perfect answer, allowing efficient use of limited space while providing individual sleeping areas.
It wasn’t until the 20th century that bunk beds became a household accessory. With increasing urbanization and smaller living spaces, families have begun to choose bunk beds for children’s bedrooms.
The advantages of bunk beds
Bunk beds offer more space inside the room. By occupying the space vertically, more floor space is created. By opting for bunk beds, instead of two single beds, you get more space for children to play, grow and develop.
The bunk bed can also be a solution in case of a small bedroom occupied by a single child. There are versions of bunk beds that integrate different storage spaces, with drawers, wardrobe or desk under the bed. The child will thus benefit from more space for playing or placing a piano, for example.
Bunk beds are not just for children. They are also a solution for adults, for the guest room, for example.
Before opting for a bunk bed, however, make sure that those who will occupy that room, wether children or adults, are not afraid of sleeping at heights or that they do not suffer from claustrophobia.
At the same time, it is recommended to take care of the access ladder to the upper bed, a solution in this sense being the wider steps with built-in drawers, obtaining both safety when climbing and additional storage spaces. It is also recommended that the upper bed has a higher frame, like a guardrail, to avoid accidents. For the same reason, children using the upper bed should be at least 6 years old.
Today, different bunk bed designs are available to suit different preferences and needs. From classic twin over twin configurations to versatile loft beds with study areas or storage solutions underneath, bunk beds continue to be a practical and stylish choice for both kids’ rooms and adult guest spaces.
